The North
The north of Mauritius is known for its magnificent sandy beaches such as Grand Bay, Péreybère, and Mont-Choisy, and is a popular tourist destination. It is a tourist destination where visitors may go for a promenade, participate in water sports, shop, or sample the wonders of local cuisine, whether in a restaurant or on a food truck. What to see in the North? The northern beaches have a well-deserved reputation. All of these lovely beaches, such as Péreybère, Mont Choisy, Trou aux Biches, Cap Malheureux, Pointe aux Canonniers, and Bain Boeuf, invite relaxation in the shadow of Casuarina trees and sunbathing. Swimming, water sports, and street food are among the activities available. Allow yourself to relax. You can watch the sunset on several of these beaches if you arrive late in the day.
The red-roofed chapel of Notre-Dame Auxiliatrice at Cap Malheureux, one of Mauritius' iconic postcards, is one of the most visited sites in the north. With the sea and the northern islands as a backdrop, it is one of the most popular spots to capture unforgettable moments from your vacation or honeymoon. Fortunately, you will see fishermen returning with their catch of the day, which will be sold directly next to the cathedral. Residents are aware of the timing and maybe seen waiting with their baskets in hand, hoping to catch the best fish!
Further inland, in Triolet, one of the region's main settlements, the Maheshwarnath Mandir, devoted to Lord Shiva, is the island's largest Hindu temple. This structure, which is part of Mauritius' cultural history, will pique your interest. You are permitted to photograph while remaining courteous. Goodlands, another large northern community, is usually bustling, with its weekly apparel fair on Tuesdays and Fridays and weekly fruit and vegetable market on Wednesdays and Saturdays. These two settlements are also excellent examples of active Mauritian life; don't be afraid to strike up a chat with the inhabitants to better understand the culture.
Sports & nature
The north is full of activities, especially water-related. Kitesurfing and windsurfing are available in the Cap Malheureux and Anse La Raie areas for sailing enthusiasts. Several catamarans or motorboat trips around the northern islands are also available, including stops at sea for diving or watching dolphins. Flat Island or Gabriel Island are wonderful spots for a picnic and a swim in the crystal clear seas.
Do you want to learn to scuba dive? The numerous licensed diving centers will take you to the most popular diving places in the north, like the Gunner's Coin, Holt's Rock, and the famed Whale Rock, which is about thirty meters deep; be careful, a hammerhead shark may be encountered... Alongside snorkeling at the Balaclava Marine Park, you may discover a preserved underwater life and even swim with turtles, giving you an entirely different diving experience.
Attractions for kids? Visit the Odysseo Aquarium in Port Louis. The first oceanarium in Mauritius and the largest in the Mascarene Archipelago. Odysseo is a destination where you may have fun while learning and educating yourself, in addition to the diversity of its onsite aquariums.
Shopping
Grand-Baie is a renowned tourist destination for shopping. You'll find anything you're looking for in the shops along the beachfront road, the region's shopping malls, or the bazaar, including apparel, accessories, handcrafts, and cuisine, among other things.
Pamplemousses is also a fun spot to shop for souvenirs. There are various businesses selling handcrafted items, local goods, beautifully constructed boat models, and other works of art.
Nightlife info
For clubbers, the north is the place to be. Grand Bay and its environs are known for their vibrant nightlife; you can choose from a variety of nightclubs, taverns, and pubs. You can go around the clubs along the beach road at night, especially on weekends, to meet Mauritanians and have fun.
Culture and history info
Pamplemousses Botanical Garden, also known as the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Garden, is a must-see for anybody traveling to the north. The king's steward, Pierre Poivre, designed this magnificent garden during Mahé de Labourdonnais' administration in the 18th century. Take a trip through Mauritius' distinctive vegetation, snap some photos at the enormous water lily ponds, and if you're lucky, you'll come across a Talipot in bloom – the tree blooms every 30-80 years and then dies...A variety of birds, deer, and tortoises live in the garden. After your tour, go around Pamplemousses village, where you can see the island's oldest church, St Francis of Assisi, founded in 1756, with its unique architecture and the statue of Paul and Virginie in the courtyard, as well as various remnants of the colonial and slave periods.
L'Aventure du Sucre awaits you on the other side of the highway at Beau Plan. Learn about the history of Mauritius' cane sugar industry, sample some sweet sweets and rum, then eat at the museum's café.
It is also necessary to pay a visit to the Domaine de Labourdonnais. This lovely colonial mansion in Mapou has been converted into a museum; the structure is as remarkable as the nicely designed garden. You can also stroll through orchards and gardens. The estate's fruit jams and fruit pastes make excellent souvenir gifts.
